Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ

With today’s scene from Luke’s Gospel Jesus announces his mission and embarks upon his proclamation of the Good News of the Kingdom.

Utilizing this text from Isaiah, how can we, as contemporary followers of Jesus, bring in the year of God’s favour for others? How can we help those blinded by contemporary agnosticism, those made lame from addictions of various kinds, those deaf to the joys of God’s Kingdom, those who remain mute in the face of suffering and torment?

Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord.

This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons of God. The event takes on the  importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes.

Homily of His Holiness Benedict XVI

Solemnity of the Epiphany
Vatican Basilica, Friday, 6 January 2012

The Epiphany is a feast of light. “Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you” (Is 60:1). With these words of the prophet Isaiah, the Church describes the content of the feast. He who is the true light, and by whom we too are made to be light, has indeed come into the world. He gives us the power to become children of God (cf. Jn 1:9,12).

At the end of the Year

We wish to acknowledge with deep gratitude at this time of the closure of the year, 2012, the   ministry involvement of many of our parishioners and others who support our ministries at the  Cathedral.

We give thanks for those who assist throughout the week and on Sundays in the celebration of Holy Mass as Acolytes, Senior Servers, Junior Servers, proclaimers of the Word, those who assist with the Liturgy for Children during the 9.30am Mass on Sundays, extra-ordinary ministers of Holy Communion, those who assist with the cleaning of altar linen and sacred vessels, wardens, ushers and greeters.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today we celebrate Gaudete Sunday, the approximate half-way mark of our preparation for Christmas. The theme of this Third Sunday in Advent is always "Joy". But what is Christian Joy?
