This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you

The readings, which reflect some aspect of the feast, feature three prominent themes: the importance of blood in the ratification of the covenant; the atoning actions of Christ; the attitude of thanksgiving.

Most people today would probably be repelled by the ritual use of blood. Yet birth blood is not subject to the same revulsion, nor is blood transfusion frowned upon. Blood is recognised as a life force, and blood relationships are cherished. In a sense this ritual makes us blood sisters and brothers of God and of each other. It seals our fate and it entitles us to the family inheritance.

Baptise them in the name of the Trinity

The feast of the Holy Trinity brings us face to face with the foundation of our faith. The readings for today provide answers to the question: Who is God? They can really only suggest something about the mystery of God, and they can do this only indirectly. They call to mind some of the wonders that God has accomplished for us and in us. It is through reflection on these gracious divine acts that we can get glimpses of God.

Beginning a Year of Grace - ”Starting afresh from Christ”

Pentecost 2012 - Pentecost 2013

Australia’s Catholic bishops have summoned us all to a Year of Grace and have challenged us through prayer, Scripture and liturgy to “Contemplate the Face of Christ” and to “Start afresh from Christ”. The Year of Grace commences Pentecost 27 May 2012 and goes through to Pentecost 19 May 2013.

Pope Benedict XVI has also proclaimed a Year of Faith for the whole Church to begin on 11 October 2012, the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council.

With grace leading to faith, and faith responding to grace the Year of Faith and our Year of Grace will complement each other.

Christ as man ascended

‘St Thomas Aquinas asserts that it was Christ as man that ascended into Heaven. As God, there was nowhere to which he can or need ascend. It is his whole humanity, body and soul, that are glorified at the Ascension. His crucified and risen body shines with greater glory than any other body. It ranks highest in dignity.
