“Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the Church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.” — James 5:14
The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament for those facing serious illness, the challenges of ageing, or upcoming surgery. It offers spiritual strength, peace, and healing through prayer and the anointing with blessed oil
Pastoral Outreach
Clergy from St Patrick’s Cathedral regularly administer this sacrament during liturgies and through visits to homes, hospitals, and aged care facilities. These include:
- Westmead and Auburn Hospitals
- Marian Nursing Home (North Parramatta)
- Uniting Lilian Wells (North Parramatta)
- Aged care homes in Oatlands and surrounding areas
A priest lays hands on the person, prays, and anoints their forehead and hands. The sacrament brings comfort, forgiveness of sins (if needed), and readiness to face illness or the journey to eternal life. It may be received more than once.
Requesting the Sacrament
If you or someone you know would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick, please contact the Cathedral office to arrange a visit or receive it during one of our liturgies.
