The Friends of St Patrick’s Cemetery are a dedicated group of parishioners and community members who have come together to preserve, protect, and promote one of Australia’s most significant Catholic heritage sites.
Reformed in July 2023 after a period of absence, the group’s mission is to advocate for the restoration, conservation, and ongoing maintenance of St Patrick’s Cemetery. This sacred place is home to the oldest Catholic Mortuary Chapel in Australia and holds a vital part of our national and diocesan story.
Through persistent advocacy to the City of Parramatta Council and State and Federal heritage bodies, the Friends have highlighted urgent needs at the site, including improving drainage, managing trees that threaten historic graves, enhancing site security, and addressing structural concerns near the Chapel.
The Friends of St Patrick’s Cemetery also work to deepen community awareness of the cemetery’s historical significance. Regular research articles on those buried at the cemetery are contributed to St Pat’s Matters to educate and inspire parishioners and the wider public.
Meetings are held regularly in the Cloister Function Rooms at St Patrick’s Cathedral, where members plan activities, share updates, and continue their important work of stewardship.
New members and supporters are always welcome. Together, we honour the memory of those who have gone before us and preserve this sacred site for future generations.
