Christian Meditation
“Be still, and encounter the presence of God.”
Christian Meditation is a prayer tradition deeply rooted in the early Church, a way of silent, contemplative prayer that invites participants to experience the presence of God in stillness. The modern Christian Meditation movement was revived in the 20th century through the work of Benedictine monk Fr John Main OSB, who taught that meditation is a universal call to “be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Inspired by the early desert fathers and mothers, Fr Main reintroduced this ancient practice to contemporary Christian life, founding meditation groups around the world through the World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM).
At St Patrick’s Cathedral, our Christian Meditation Group meets every Tuesday morning at 9:30am. The group follows the simple but profound Christian Meditation format:
- A short spiritual reading
- A period of silent meditation (usually 20–30 minutes)
- A time for reflection and sharing (optional)
Meditation offers a pathway to deeper interior silence, allowing the Spirit to transform our hearts beyond words or thoughts. It is a way of prayer that nourishes inner peace, attentiveness to God, and openness to grace.
As Fr John Main taught:
“The important aim in Christian Meditation is to allow God’s mysterious and silent presence within us to become more and more not only a reality but the reality which gives meaning, shape and purpose to everything we do.”
Everyone is welcome.
